Risk & Safety Information — Waiho Hot Tubs, Franz Josef

At Waiho Hot Tubs, we aim to provide a relaxing, high quality experience in a unique natural setting.

This page outlines important safety information and activity specific risks to help you make an informed decision before participating.

Nature of the Experience

Waiho Hot Tubs offers private, wood-fired hot tubs set within a rainforest environment in Franz Josef.

Each booking provides exclusive use of a hot tub for approximately 60 minutes in an outdoor setting.

Key Risks & Safety Considerations

While this is considered a low-risk activity, the following hazards should be understood.

Hot Water & Temperature Control

Guests can adjust the temperature of their hot tub via the cold tap. A recommended soaking range is between 38°C and 40°C, and temperatures above 40°C are not recommended. Higher temperatures increase the risk of overheating, dehydration, or light-headedness. Guests should stay well hydrated before and during use, as hot water exposure can increase the risk of dehydration.

Guests are responsible for monitoring and adjusting the temperature to a safe and comfortable level. Guests should exit the tub immediately if feeling unwell.

Wood-Fired Heating & Fire Safety

Waiho Hot Tubs are heated using wood-fired systems. These are managed by staff; however, hot surfaces and heating components are present.

Guests should not touch or interfere with any part of the fire, heating system, flue, or hot surfaces. The only exception is the air vent control, which may be adjusted if needed.

Slips, Trips & Wet Surfaces

Surfaces around the tubs may be wet, uneven, or slippery. Extra care should be taken when entering, exiting, and moving around the site.

Outdoor Environment

The experience takes place in a natural rainforest setting. Weather conditions, including rain, cold temperatures, and insects, may affect comfort and safety.

Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol may impair judgement and increase the risk of injury. Guests choosing to consume alcohol must do so responsibly. Glassware is not permitted in or around the hot tubs. Guests should stay well hydrated before and during use, as alcohol can increase the risk of dehydration.

Waiho Hot Tubs reserves the right to refuse entry or end a session if guests are intoxicated or behaving in a way that may compromise safety. No glass is permitted in the tubs, we can provide cups and wine goblets.

Health & Suitability

This experience may not be suitable for everyone.

You should not use the hot tubs if you are pregnant without prior medical advice, have heart conditions or high blood pressure, are under the influence of drugs or excessive alcohol, or have open wounds, infections, or contagious conditions.

If you have any medical concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a healthcare professional before booking.

Guest Responsibilities

By participating, guests agree to follow all instructions provided by staff, use the facilities safely and respectfully, monitor their own wellbeing during the experience, and adjust temperature appropriately while exiting the tub if feeling unwell.

Supervision & Age Policy

Children are welcome during daytime sessions. Children under 5 must be closely supervised at all times by a responsible adult, and adults are responsible for monitoring children’s time in the hot tub to prevent overheating.

Children under 10 are not permitted in evening sessions. Waiho Hot Tubs reserves the right to refuse entry where safety may be compromised.

Additional Considerations for Children

Children are more sensitive to heat and can overheat more quickly than adults. Lower water temperatures and shorter soak times are strongly recommended.

Children may also be more vulnerable to slips and falls on wet surfaces. Constant, close supervision is required at all times, and caregivers are responsible for monitoring children’s safety and wellbeing throughout the experience.

Hygiene & Water Quality

Fresh mountain water is used in the tubs and is not chemically treated

All tubs are drained, cleaned, and refilled between each booking.

Emergency Procedures

Staff are available on site during operating hours. In the event of an emergency, guests should contact staff immediately. Emergency services can be contacted by dialling 111.
